How to create a multi-dimensional TX816 performance on MONTAGE

Here's the chart supplied originally with the TX816. Check out the "RHODES CHORUS" on line 5 -
The TX816 comes with a bank which has 8 different patches of the same E. Piano sound. Each one of them has a slight alteration in the modulator, the algorithm, etc. When you load all 8 of them, detune and pan them accordingly (detune instructions are in the chart), you get an amazing, multi-dimensional sound.
This sound is guaranteed to blow you away! all that without any additional effect processing.
I will share the original TX816 bank converted to MONTAGE here.

Having 8 modules locked onto the one patch is pretty serious. You can pan and detune them and you end up with a very huge and lush sounding patch which was also very wide too.

The MONTAGE has two amazing TX816 performances, namely "The TX816 E.Piano 1 & 2". Check them out - being playing here by the great Katsunori Ujiie on minute 2:10



As Manny Fernandez noted, the polyphony of the Montage allows for making sounds ala' the TX816 in a modern package, by stacking, combining and blending individual FM-X Parts like they are TF1 modules in a 'component' voicing approach which is extremely powerful. An old inside joke from way back in the day "... nothing wrong with FM that more Operators can't fix..."

Progamming the TX816 is more than just panning and detuning a bunch of the same patches layered togther.

Take Strings as an example, here's a way to approach the TX816. While you might start with the 3 TF1's with the same patch base string sound detuned and panned hard left, center, and hard right the first thing would be to make sure they all had slightly different LFO speeds and delays. Then with another 2 TF1's you'd again have duplicate patches loaded up, but with say a completely different 'hard bowed' string type timbre, maybe a with extremely wide velocity senstivity, detuned and maybe panned 50% right and 50% left, again different LFO delay, rate and depth and maybe sine wave LFO instead of triangle. Then another 2 TF1's, where one is providing enhancements to the timbres and character of the low range notes, and another does the same for the higher range notes that you can't do with Level Scaling alone -- a lot of those differences need different Operator Frequency Ratios, maybe a fixed frequency (or two) and different envelopes etc.

So you blend together a layered / split / additive approach to the final sound with each TF1. In the Montage, those would be separate Parts.

For an electric piano, similar approach, start with a 'base' sound, add another part for all the electro-mechanical noisy and clonky bits. Then layer / pan / detune to taste, add a part for just the very high and one for very low velocity timbres, another one or two split high and low for the different regions of tine overtones etc. and you're there.

best thing about the TX816 is the amount of synthesis power in the form factor, and being able to approach progamming it both "horizontally" with detunes and pans of similar voices to thicken it up, or "vertically" with unique but related voices providing indvidual components of the sound. With 8 modules you can combine a quite a bit of both.
Montage is very equivalent- in fact it is literally 100% compatible with TX816 voices, with vastly improved audio fidelity, 2 extra operators in every Part (i.e module), a unique and versatile modulation/control source with Motion Sequences and wide array of effects processing if you choose.

The TX816 is a monster of DX and FM digital synthesis. It is a unique system in that it is a rack unit that could take up to eight TF1 modules. A TF1 module is basically a DX7 condensed down to a single circuit board with almost no front panel controls.
Each TF1 module consists of a 16-voice, 6-operator digital FM synth engine. So a complete TX816 with all eight TF1 modules would offer up to 128 voices and 48 operators!

In FM-X, we have 128 voices and 64 operators!

THIS is what i'm talking about! i'm going to program some sounds myself now using this method. FM-X is really powerful for this! its amazing what we have today in synthesizers.. all in the box.
i'll be happy to hear some more tips and tricks!
